Austin Kniffin Intro

My name is Austin Kniffin. I am in my second year here at OSU Marion majoring in Pharmacy. I have 3 siblings, two in high school and a twin brother which all of you obviously know already. My fun fact is that i like the NBA team the Miami Heat.

Writing the poem for me was kind of difficult. In my life i have probably honestly only have written maybe 1 or 2 poems, and it was towards the beginning of high school. I knew what i wanted to write about because i recently lost my grandfather to cancer, but still writing a poem about him was very challenging for me. The poem turned out alright i guess, kind of what i expected for the amount of time i spent on it (about an hour or a little more).  Here is my poem:

"September 6, 2011"

No one else showed me how much they cared
No one else gave me the strength to persevere
But you did
Sitting here remembering how strong you were
Only makes me believe God’s company you deserved
You always used to say
“You’re my hero Austin In life you will do great things”
The truth is you were like the guardian of our family

Never even knew how sad I’d be
Realizing that the one who believed in me
Is no longer here
I will never forget the last look your eyes gave
Those last few moments I wish I could have saved
Makes me wonder what went through your head
As you lay there and waited for the cancer to spread

As I think back to the person you were
I’ll never forget your courage, your kindness
Or your will for your life lessons to be heard
If I could see you today there is only one thing I would need to say
“I love you Grandpa thank you for all you’ve done
And continue to do for me today”

The profile in Holding On that i personally liked the most so far was the one about Moreese Bickham. The reason why i enjoyed this one out of all of the others is because this one seemed to have a "happy" ending. Moreese spent 30 plus years in jail because of a "murder" that happened when he was very young. Moreese was only defending himself from two, basically prejudice, police officers who wrongly attacked him and had the intent of killing him. Moreese ends up getting a hold of the gun and shoots both of the men. The trial he received was unjust to say the least and he was sentenced to life after a few law changes took place.
"Everybody know that's the way it happen. But the deputies were Klan Dragons, you know, and the Klan had the upper hand...they made sure wouldn't nobody in my behalf..they would burn their houses and shoot'em when they come out" (ISAY 35). This quote shows that Moreese never had a chance to be innocent he was guilty from the start regardless of what really happened.
The reason why this ends "happy" to me is because after waiting in prison for almost 40 years, Moresse was scheduled for release on January 10, 1996, after heavy lobbying in his favor done by many many people. I think it shows that this man never gave up hope because he knew he should be free because he was a good man and unjustly put into the situation in the first place. And for me stories like that i enjoy, i enjoy when people who are "good" get justice after all is said and done.

  3. I think your poem was really good, and I can relate to it because I also lost my grandma to cancer. It's really rough to go through something like that, but the memories can never be replaced!
