"It was beautiful"

"It was beautiful to see this. It was beautiful to see people not hiding. And that's when we knew that nothing was going to ever be the same"

This quote from Sylvia (Ray) Rivera is from another one of my favorite profiles in Holding On. This is one of my favorite quotes because it just shows that people can make a difference. She and her fellow drag queens made a difference by standing up against the police and fighting for what they believe in. Although this involved violence, it has a positive message because sometimes you need to fight for what you believe in. I was impacted by this story because Sylvia has a rough life from the absolute beginning and even at times when she wanted, and tried, to give up, she still pushed through. In our culture, everyone is fighting their own struggles and some people may not be as different as them seem.

One theme in Sylvia Rivera’s profile in Holding On is gay rights. Instead of doing the broad topic of Gay Rights, I focused on the ability to get married in the United States. When I first searched this i was surprised that the first and most popular website was called "States That Allow Gay Marriage".. makes sense I guess. When I went to that website it was very pretty and colored coded, making it very easy to understand. I knew that marriage amongst same sex couples in the U.S wasn't very popular but I knew it had been progressing in the past several years. Just less than 1/5 of the states in America allow same-sex marriage, only 9. That surprised me. Also at the bottom of this website they listed reasons as to why gay marriage is banned. Some of these were just stupid.

  2. This was a good profile and you did a good post. It is interesting to find out that only a handful of states allow gar marriage but I do believe this will become a more talked about issue in the future.

  3. I think that you chose the best quote from the profile. It seems to be the one that is chosen most often for the profile. This profile would have been my second choice for the post. I definitely agree with your views as well.

  5. I loved the picture that you used, it's beautiful. I don't understand why some states wont allow gay marriages. What does it really matter to them?? our society is nothing like what it used to be and people need to realize that banning them from getting marries isn't going to solve what they think is a problem.
