Markie Moyer

My name is Markie Moyer. I am a fifth year senior and plan to graduate at the end of the semester in education. My fun fact is that I have fifteen dogs. My family breeds, raises, and shows Australian Shepherds.

I expected the process of writing my poem to be fairly easy seeing that we were writing about a close friend. I started the poem with many ideas in my head of what I wanted to write about but then, I had a hard time putting my thoughts together. It was hard for me to come up with a consistent topic instead of having random thoughts throughout the poem. Therefore, for an outside reader, I can understand why my poem may not make sense.

My favorite profile that I have read so far is Moreese Bickham: Prisoner. I connected to this writing because I felt very sympathetic for Mr. Bickham because after being sentenced to life in prison, the pardon recommended his time to be cut to forty years, but he kept getting denied by the governors. Somehow, Mr. Bickham stayed positive and continued to say, "as long at there's life, there's hope" (pg.36). He didn't have anyone to testify in his behalf because they were all threatened by the Klan and were scared for their lives. Mr. Bickham was just defending himself and is being punished for a crime he shouldn't be. The most inspiring quote I found in this writing was in the beginning when hes talking about his rose bush and how if he didn't take care of it, it will die like most people in prison. He said, "but me, I got a life to live, in here or out. Make the best you can out of a bad situation - that's what I've been doing all my life" (pg. 34). It just made me think of my own life and how I sometimes get upset about little things that I believe are big but then I think of how bad things could really be. It makes me thankful for what I do have.

  4. Well luckily poetry does not always have to necessarily make sense to an outside reader! Poetry is about putting your thoughts and feelings onto paper so it does not matter if it makes sense to anyone else or not. Yeah, I just got deep right there lol.
