Exploration 9

A major theme that I noticed while watching Fresh was the theme of taking something that is a problem and creating a solution for it. The major problem is how our food is made and grown and feed. Many believe they way our food is made is causing more problems than doing good. So in this film I believe most of it consisted of how to fix this problem and how we can all begin to eat healthier. Something that really convinced me about this healthier food is how easy it is to grow your own food. I didn't realize how simple it is to make fresh food that you know has not been tampered with. It really opened my eyes also to the thought that even if you think you're being healthy and buying vegetables at the store those vegetables still could have been tampered with and are not as healthy as they could be.
A lot of doubts that I now have about my food is, is it really as healthy as I think. I also did not enjoying learning that the cows we eat are eating dead cows... I just feel like that is so wrong and also very discusting.  Joel saltin proved my point when he said "we've been promoting feeding dead cows to cows." I also have doubts about the "fresh" vegetables in the stores now. In all reality they have been sprayed and tampered with maybe just as much as the meat has been. This video has really made me think about the food I eat now and where it came from. Even though organic food is pricier I believe that is well worth it because it really is all natural. I also love to buy the un-caged chicken eggs at the store because that is so sad what they do to all those chickens in such a small area.
I think the things I have learned in this movie were very eye opening and made me realize things that maybe I wouldn't have before. I think it is such a neat concept to think about our food having a name too. Karen, will's co-director said "my food didn't have a name, but it does now." Whats wrong with being too fresh? At keast we know where our food came from then. I definitely think about what I eat now.

  1. I agree i also questioned if the healthy food is really healthy and it was also a big let down to find out that the cows are eating things that are not in their natural diet i guess organic is the way to go

  3. I think about what I eat now too. It kinda grossed me out at first to think about all the fast food industries. But I think it is very important to know where your food is coming from.

  4. Super markets just seem like a joke now. We walk in to the produce and fresh veritable area and are made to believe that those products are the best and freshest around when really if we were to buy lettuce from the store and also from a farmers market, the farmer market lettuce would go bad faster. This just goes to show how much preservatives are in the simplest things such as lettuce. But the question is... would most Americans still go for the super market lettuce solely for that purpose that it will last longer? So they won't waste their money and have to buy it again sooner?

  5. I also thought the film was an eye opener, at least for me. I will definitely think more about what I am buying the next time I go to the grocery store (basically never). Also, I myself wonder what exactly it takes to label your food "Organic." Like every other product in our society I'm sure that corporations will exploit the push for organic food and attempt to pass products as organic that really aren't.

  6. I also am leery of the fruits and vegetables at the store. Not only have they been sprayed with chemicals but they have been genetically modified to be as big as they can possibly get. The biggest difference I see is when I eat home grown strawberries and store bought strawberries. The ones from the store are much larger, but lack the sweet taste of a home grown strawberry. I would assume that the nutritional value is not as great in store bought goods either.

  7. I have never been a fan of the idea that we should be sacrificing quality for quantity just because its cheaper at the store. I have always known the things we buy at the store were largely crap, but what can you do? Most people will buy the cheap long lasting stuff just because they cant be bothered to get the stuff that is better for you.
