Exploration 9

I believe one of the main messages the video Fresh was trying to portray is how the fastest, cheapest or the easiest way out is not the answer. At the beginning of the film it was stated that "Americans fear one thing, inconvenience." I think that the video revolved around the fact that Americans take advantage of the resources we have. The big industries mistreat animals and "use antibiotics to keep it alive" as Micheal Pollen said. The factories are doing the bare minimum for the animals. Three or more chickens are stuffed in small crates where they are unable to move. This helps the companies mass produce the meat, even if it is not the healthiest or safest.
Another important theme that stood out to me was the way our land should be used. Joel Salatin said that people need to "respect the design of nature." He explained how the animals travel and eat from the grasses. The animals then produce the waste that helps the crops grow again. He believes in keeping the animals active and mimicking the old behavior of cows; walking and exercise. Joel's dad said that we need to "treat a herbivore like a herbivore." He also talked about how the chickens eat the larva from the grasses and that they are team players just like the rest of his farm animals. He believes that the industries have no boundaries on their meat production and that the chicken has a beak and claws for a reason.
I would love to buy all my food from small farms. I think the "Good Nature Family Farms" is really neat and I hope that people support it. The only doubt I have is the expense of these organic products. I am a sucker for fast food but I am glad that I was able to see this movie to inform me more about the organic and local movement. I will try my best to pick the better products because of this video.

  1. It's scary to think that our biggest fear is inconvenience. No wonder all other countries think we are lazy!! 9 times out of 10 we will go through with the easiest way to accomplish something.

  2. It's really sad how lazy our society is but at the same time I see it as somewhat of a trap. With so many people in poverty it is easy to understand why even the slightest increase in cost of a product drives consumers to the "bad stuff."

  3. I agree, seeing that people in US think that the easy way is better. If we were not so lazy then people would actually notice that if you don't take the easier way it SO MUCH better for everyone.
